The sister city relationship between Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, and Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, was formally established in 1981. This bond was initiated to promote cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and friendship between the citizens of both cities.
The idea was to bridge the geographical distance and foster a connection that transcends cultural boundaries.
In the early years, the Kelowna Kasugai Sister City Association (KKSCA) focused on building the foundation for a lasting partnership. A series of cultural exchanges, official visits, and student delegations marked the beginning of a dynamic relationship. One of the first significant milestones was the establishment of the Kasugai Garden in Kelowna. This serene Japanese garden, opened in 1987, symbolizes the harmony and beauty of the connection between Kelowna and Kasugai. It serves as a peaceful retreat and a testament to the enduring friendship between the two cities.
Over the years, the KKSCA has organized numerous cultural exchanges and educational programs to foster deeper connections. These exchanges have included art exhibitions, traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, and performances of Japanese music and dance in
Kelowna. Conversely, Kelowna has shared its local traditions, such as Canadian folk music and indigenous art, with the people of Kasugai. Educational programs have been a cornerstone of the sister city relationship. Student exchange programs have allowed young people from both cities to experience each other's cultures firsthand. These programs have not only enhanced language skills but also created lifelong friendships and broadened perspectives.
The KKSCA has celebrated several significant anniversaries with grand events and ceremonies. The 10th, 20th, and 30th anniversaries of the sister city relationship were marked by special delegations visiting each city, where they participated in cultural festivities and official
ceremonies. These celebrations have reinforced the commitment to maintaining and strengthening the bond between Kelowna and Kasugai. In these events, dignitaries, community leaders, and citizens from both cities have come together to reflect on the achievements of the past and to envision the future of their partnership. 2026 will be the 45 anniversary of the fellowship between Kelowna and Kasugai.
The success of the KKSCA is largely attributed to the active involvement and support of the community. Volunteers from various backgrounds have dedicated their time and efforts to
organizing events, hosting visitors, and promoting the sister city relationship. Local businesses, educational institutions, and cultural organizations have also played a vital role in supporting the association’s initiatives. The collaborative spirit of the community has ensured that the sister city relationship remains vibrant and meaningful.
